Online Safety & Online Savvy
The Internet can enhance children’s learning in several ways. They have at their fingertips a wealth of information, creative tools, and fascinating new ways to connect to the outside world. But this brings with it new risks, for example:
- Exposure to inappropriate material
- Inappropriate contact with adults
- Cyberbullying
- Revealing their personal information
This is why our lessons that involve internet-enabled devices are closely planned and monitored by adults. We also operate strict firewall and content filters throughout the school network to ensure that children aren’t exposed to anything inappropriate.
In addition to keeping our children safe, we also endeavor to teach them to be savvy. Through carefully planned activities, our children are taught to be skeptical about what they read on the internet, and to carefully evaluate what they read online. This includes encouraging them to ask questions like ‘Is this website fact or opinion?’ and ‘Just because it’s on the internet, does that mean that it’s true?’
