Hedgehog Club News
Why not spend the winter with The Hedgehog Club exploring all that the great outdoors has to offer and experience the woods in all their winter glory? We might even have some snowy days!
“There is no such thing as the wrong sort of weather, just the wrong sort of clothing.”
So, wrap up, layer up and come and join us in the woods…
In January you can find The Hedgehog Club at:
Deer Park Woods, Witney
Every Friday during term time. The new term will begin on Friday 10th January 2020 and run until February 14th.
As January is the RSPB’s Big Garden Bird Watch we will be focussing on birds for the first few weeks – what ones can we see in the woods, how can we attract them into our garden and make sure they survive the winter.
Cogges Farm, Witney
You can find us here every Tuesday from 10am until 12pm. The new term starts on 7th January and we will run until the 11th February.
For both these sessions booking will be available on the website before Christmas and places need to be booked in advance, discounts are available for block booking.
I am also offering some free sessions during the winter months. Please get in touch if you want to take advantage of these- everyone who books between now and the end of next term can have a free one-off session by using a discount code for booking. If you have already booked for the term I am offering you a free session if you introduce a friend to the group- your friend will get a session free and so will you. Just let me know before you book and I will give you the code to use to claim your free session.
Blenheim Palace Family Forest School.
These sessions happen every Wednesday, in the holidays too, from 10.00am -1pm. They are free if you have paid to get into the Palace or have an annual pass. There is no need to book, you can just drop in and stay as long as you like.
The mud kitchen, bug hunting, den building, rope swing and slope sliding are always available. Each week there are other activities to take part in and during term time we will toast marshmallows on the fire. Come and join in the fun.
We may be changing sites in January so please ask at Flagstaff for directions- but I will also post on FB once it is confirmed.
The Hedgehog Club Birthday Parties.
Does your child have a birthday coming up in 2020? Do you want a hassle and mess free party in the outdoors? Well look no further- I run Woodland Birthday parties at Hailey Community Wood, near Witney. The package includes making your own party bag, cooking a snack on the fire, hot chocolate, squash and hot drinks for the adults as well as den building and natural craft activities. Get in touch and I can send you all the information, including costs. Suitable from 3 up to 8 years old.
Holiday Activity Days. I am planning some holiday fun in April, May and August so keep an eye on the website, Face Book page or join the mailing list to hear about what is happening with The Hedgehog Club. Winter Forest School
As November begins and the weather starts to turn a little chillier you maybe unsure about being outdoors when the weather is so cold. You maybe asking yourself these questions: do children get sick a lot?
Don’t they catch colds from being outside in the winter?
Don’t they get cold and wet and freezing?
But I would like to put the other side of the argument to you and encourage you to sign up to a winter term of Forest School. There are many benefits to being outside in cold weather: Including-
- running around gulping great big lungfuls of fresh air.
- raising their heart rates by climbing, digging, rolling, jumping and swinging, a mixture of bone strengthening, muscle building and cardiovascular exercise.
- improving their emotional health, allowing for relaxation and calmness and a heightened sense of well being.
- building up their immunity playing with dirt, mud and other natural materials.
The British Heart Foundation states that 2-5 year olds should be taking at least 3 hours exercise every day to benefit their current health but also to install future health habits and benefits.
“Children of pre-school age who are capable of walking unaided should be physically active daily for at least 180 minutes (3 hours), spread throughout the day.
— BHF National Centre
So, with all that evidence in front of you what are you waiting for?
Book your child onto a term of Hedgehog Club either at Cogges Farm, Witney on Tuesday mornings 10-12pm or at Deer Park Wood, Witney on Friday mornings. (Cogges starts on November 5th and Deer Park starts on November 8th.)
The total cost for a 6 week term is £30 if you book all sessions at the beginning. (A saving of £2 per session.) If you want to try a one-off session the cost is £7 per session.
The sessions are open to preschool age children and their carers. The sessions run along Forest School principles so are led by what your child wants to do. Each week the mud kitchen, the hammocks, bug hunting and cooking on the fire are always available. There is a theme each week with a story and the session ends with cooking on the campfire, drinking hot chocolate and eating homemade biscuits. The theme for week one will fireworks.
Booking is in advance on the website www.thehedgehogclub.co.uk
